Welcome back NYC! Well it’s a notable subway week due to the release of the remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3/One Two Three. I have to say, like most other subway enthusiasts find the original to be a fantastic film. Not only is it nearly perfect in its representation of the NYC subway, but it is a well-paced movie with little extraneous action sequences that still keeps you involved and excited. In short, it is a well-crafted film. So I had to see the remake for that reason alone, but there were also a few days of filming at my local 7 train station at Woodside. That right away clued me in that this would not be as faithful to to the subway as the original since I can’t think of a way the Pelham line would make it to 61 St in Queens. The crew did go through the trouble of changing the signs at Woodside to say Elder Ave. As for the new film, I was pleased and dissapointed, if that makes sense. This could have been a dreadful movie but it certainly wasn’t. Denzel Washington was stellar in Walter Matthau’s role. He didn’t have Matthau’s dry humor but the character was eminantly believable. Gandolfini also gets major props for a mayor that was not one-dimensional like the original. Travolta was hammy but fun. On the downside, oh the subway problems. Apparently now the Pelham line passes by Shea Stadium to get to Coney Island. Help us all. So the original remains a superior film. But it doesn’t feature a glimps of my local pub and diner or a final glorious shot of the city from the apartment next to mine. That gave me shiver. Happy Tracks New York!
SATURDAY UPDATE: It is the return of the long-lost C train! There are a lot of changes to the A and C trains this weekend, but upon closer inspection it appears that at 5 AM Sunday the 8th Ave line begins normal weekend service with full C train privileges. Also, late night Saturday Manhattan-bound 6 trains run express between Hunts Pt and 3 Ave.
Welcome back NYC. Sorry for the delay in posting this week. I just plum forgot to update as I went to work this morning. Not to worry though, there were a bevy of notices at stations reminding me of my lax behavior and shaming me into a late post. The good news is that there is not too much to report this weekend. The changes this weekend are mostly of the temporary nature, i.e. late night, single day, and daytime only changes. There are some major D, L, and A line changes but it is mostly confined away from Manhattan. So enjoy a reasonably pain free weekend on the tracks. Happy Tracks New York!
SaturdayUpdate: Be aware, Queens-bound F trains are running on the V line, but I am unsure if that is running local between Queens Plaza and Roosevelt Ave. To me it seems that it would be an unnecessary switch to move it to the local track. Just be ready for either since the notice is unclear.
Welcome back New York. There’s not much to report this weekend. There is not much MTA news and not much for weekend service changes. The only major new announcement is no L train between Lorimer and Myrtle-Wyckoff. Otherwise, it is the same screwy F train, nearly nonexistent R and G trains. And absolutely, under no circumstances, will there be any C train ever! So have a good weekend everyone, and Happy Tracks New York!
DISCLAIMER: The MTA will make changes to train service based on the
second-to-second needs of the dispatchers and conductors, as well as
making full day changes without informing the public.
