Weekend of Nov. 28

SATURDAY UPDATE: Map has been updated for Sunday and some little tweaks. Enjoy everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! There aren’t too many changes to report with the holiday weekend, although the 1, F, and Q all have some serious changes. The biggest news on the rails this week is the re-opening of the northbound side of the Cortlandt St station. The station has been closed due to work at the WTC but there has been enough progress to at least partially re-open the station. It’s always great news to see progress at Ground Zero and it is always good news to have better subway service. Have a great holiday everyone and Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of Nov. 21

Saturday morning update: I was incorrect about one aspect of the A train this weekend. It is running local in both directions between 125th and 59th Sts. And remember, there is no Newark Light Rail service this weekend.

Welcome once again NYC. There are some fairly some significant changes this weekend, especially to the A, D, and N trains. Things are tough to keep track of on each line. Take the A for example. Going southbound it travels local to 125th St, express to 59th St, local to W 4 St, local on the F to Jay St, and finally local to Far Rockaway. The N train terminates at Queensboro Plaza during daylight hours and then runs via Whitehall and the 4th Ave local/West End express. But going northbound it is normal to Queensboro Plaza. Confused yet? That’s why the map is here. On a funny side note, there is a service advisory for the Staten Island Railway that is only possible on SI. It reads “Staten Island Railway (SIR) advises customers to allow extra travel time as trains may need to move at slower speeds due to fallen leaves on the tracks.” Wow. I sympathize with Staten Islanders who always feel like they get the short end of the city’s attention stick. Click on the map for clarity and Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of Nov. 14

Welcome again NYC. This is one of those weekends that’s going to be not just inconvenient, but confusing as well. I am still trying to figure out what is going on underneath Central Park West this weekend. There are a few clear things: The downtown C train is express from 145th St all the way to Canal St. The D will pick up the slack by running local downtown until Columbus Circle. It also appears that the D will be the only train stopping at 135th St in either direction. The real problem is, I don’t really know what the A is doing through all this. The only thing I know for sure is that it will skip 155th and 163rd Uptown along with the C train at all times. But is it running local or express between 145th and Canal? and in which direction? I’m not really sure. If I find out more, I’ll let you know. Plus Brooklyn is a bit of a mess under 4th Ave and riders in Wakefield have a LONG ride ahead of them. Best of luck out there. Happy Tracks New York!

Weekend of Nov. 7

Welcome back straphangers. The New York Post has an interesting article yesterday that may point to some potential improvements down the road in the MTA’s handling of weekend service disruptions. According to the Post, the Transit Riders Council (a permanent citizen advisory board to the MTA) has been analyzing the MTA’s performance in terms on on-time trains and adequate communications on weekends and initial findings are that the MTA is lacking in both areas. They will continue studying for two more weekends and then issue a report some time in 2010. Hopefully this motivates the MTA to better communicate with its customers. The article is here. As for this weekend, E train riders rejoice!!!! There is normal service from Jamaica Center to World Trade Center all weekend (well, except for a one night, late night Queens Blvd express run). Of course that means the F will divert itself until noon Sunday. C’est la vie. Here’s the map. Happy Tracks New York!

DISCLAIMER: The MTA will make changes to train service based on the
second-to-second needs of the dispatchers and conductors, as well as
making full day changes without informing the public.
